Rationale

Research projects in chemistry are frequently dependent on instrumental and physical procedures both for monitoring preparative procedures and for studying fundamental chemical phenomena.

Aims

To prepare students to undertake practical work in instrumental and physical procedures.

Objectives

Demonstrate comprehension of the theoretical and practical principles of selected physical methods in chemistry.

Content

The exact course content varies depending of the exact nature of the research project but could typically include a selection from the following:

  • Collection and interpretation of spectroscopic data, particularly nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, visible and mass spectra of organic compounds.
  • Modern capillary gas chromatography, injection methods particularly desorption procedures, column selection, factors effecting selectivity. Headspace methods, for determining volatile composition. Extraction with supercritical fluids.

    Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Tutorials, reading, some lectures if available and appropriate.

    Assessment

This Unit offers research based Student Negotiated Assessment in which students will discuss and select the most suitable assessment types and topics to their goals for completion of the unit.Students will be provided with feedback in both written and verbal form via assessment feedback and consultations with supervisory and/or academic staff. Additional feedback may be sought through your Unit Coordinator.
