Sample subject outline - Semester 1 2013
Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
The specialised and technically specific nature of each student's research program requires a customised theoretical foundation. The availability of the unit is necessary to provide an appropriate focussed theoretical support program.
Aims
To provide the theroretical framework that underpins physics research at the advanced level in areas selected by the student from a range offered by the physics discipline.
Objectives
1. Understand key concepts of the theoretical background in the selected topic.
2. Apply physical mathematical approaches to solve typical problems in selected topic area.
3. Identify key problems and challenges facing research in selected area.
Content
A course of lectures or a reading program on a topic selected by student in consultation with the principal supervisor. The content topic will be determined by the student's area of interest and availability of appropriate staff, visiting academics and specialist external personnel.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The unit will comprise an appropriate combination of a self paced reading program, lectures, tutorials, laboratory work and field visits. The exact nature will be dependent on the student's research topic.
Assessment
This unit will be assessed through a combination of submissions, such as tutorial exercises and assignments, and formal examinations. All assessed tutorials and assignments will be returned to students as soon as is practically possible.
