Rationale
Students completing a Masters degree can expect to take a major role within their place of employment, either in management or R & D. Units within the Masters program are therefore chosen to further develop knowledge in the appropriate area of interest and study, or introduce the student to new topics relevant to the employment, as well as develop leadership and management skills.
Aims
This unit aims to develop the student's knowledge and understanding of topics in lighting of particular interest to the student. In particular it can aim to give students greater insight into aspects they will cover in their Masters project. It will also help to develop the student's research, organisation and communication skills.
Objectives
Depending on the units chosen, on completion of this unit you should be able to demonstrate:
1. Knowledge and skills relevant to the area of study.
2. An ability for creative and analytical thinking, as well as independent problem solving capabilities.
3. An ability to work independently, and if appropriate, collaboratively.
4. Write papers and/or reports suitable for scientific or professional publication.
5. Characteristics of self-reliance and leadership.
Content
The content of this Masters unit may encompass any relevant area of lighting or associated topic. In particular it may be chosen as necessary preliminary studies (eg through a preset reading course) for the chosen Masters project (PCN320).
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
These will be determined and set within the chosen unit. In general however although teaching staff will provide assistance as required, studies in this unit will be student driven. Consiltation sessions may be face-toface or on-line.
Assessment
Assessment in this unit comprises both Presentations and a Written Report and will be based on Criteria Reference Assessment. Students will be provided (through Blackboard) with a copy of the CRA document describing the criteria used for assessment of this unit.
For successful completion of this unit you will be expected to obtain a grade of 4 or better in both the written report and the oral presentation.Feedback to students in the formative components of the assessment will be provided by the supervisor(s) of the project, based on their assessment of the student's performance and outcomes during the project, and on the content and presentation of the final report and oral presentation at the end of the project.
