The requirements for a Masters include an in-depth study of a particular area of lighting that is in keeping with the student's interest. This takes the form of a project that is usually undertaken in an area of particular interest to the student. Although the project may be directly associated with the student's employment, it should have sufficient originality for the student to be able to demonstrate initiative, an understanding of scientific method, and an ability to problem-solve to obtain a meaningful and realistic solution.

Rationale

Although the project may be directly associated with the student's employment, it should have sufficient originality for the student to be able to demonstrate initiative, an understanding of scientific method, and an ability to problem-solve to obtain a meaningful and realistic solution.
Aims
This unit comprises a major research-type project and aims to develop student's research, organisation and communication skills in practical areas likely to be encountered in the student's workplace.
Objectives
Depending on the project chosen, on completion of this unit you should be able to demonstrate:
1. Knowledge and skills relevant to the project.
2. An ability for creative and analytical thinking, as well as independent problem solving capabilities.
3. An ability to work independently, and if appropriate, collaboratively.
4. Write papers and/or reports suitable for scientific or professional publication.
Content
The content of the Masters project may encompass any relevant area of lighting, ranging from undertaking a survey of current (or historical) practices, working with materials, measurement and experimentation, design and techniques to any aspect of leading edge technology.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Students will undertake a project of their own choosing. Undertake their own research and development of material, and submit a report at the completion of the project. Consultations may be either face-to-face or on-line
Assessment
Assessment in this unit comprises both Presentations and a Written Report and will be based on Criteria Reference Assessment. Students will be provided (through Blackboard) with a copy of the CRA document describing the criteria used for assessment of this unit.
For successful completion of this unit you will be expected to obtain a grade of 4 or better in both the written report and the oral presentation.Feedback to students in the formative components of the assessment will be provided by the supervisor(s) of the project, based on their assessment of the students performance and outcomes during the project, and on the content and presentation of the final report and oral presentation at the end of the project.
