Students undertaking Honours are required to select and undertake, in consultation with a supervisor, a substantial project in an appropriate area. Each project is assessed on the basis of an extensive written report and an oral presentation. (60 credit points achieved at completion of PCB700-1, PCB700-2, PCB700-3, PCB700-4 and PCB700-5.)

Rationale

The purpose of this unit is to enable you to carry out independent research in a specific area of chemistry.

Aims

This full year unit will assist you to develop skills in research and report writing as independent learners. The aim is to develop your skills as a researcher to enable you to proceed directly to a PhD program.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:

1. Develop skills in the techniques required to conduct independent research in your selected area.
2. Exhibit skills of information or data collection.
3. Develop an improve your skills in independent thinking and critical analysis.
4. Organise, analyse and interpret evidence to reach a meaningful conclusion.
5. Report research findings in writing and by oral communication.

Content

The project will be different for every student and the topic will be chosen after discussion with prospective supervisors and the honours coordinator.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

A supervised program of research.

Assessment

Two seminars will be presented during the year.
A thesis will be presented in November and assessed by two independent examiners.
A viva will be conducted approximately three weeks after presentation of the thesis.Feedback will be provided by your Supervisor.
