This unit is intended to cater for the needs of students whose background in mathematics is either weak or does not reach the equivalent of Senior Mathematics B. It is intended to provide the concepts and skills needed for successful study of those units within the university which assume a background equivalent to Senior Mathematics B. This unit is incompatible with a grade of High Achievement in Senior Mathematics B. To develop your mathematical skills in and understanding of algebra, functions and graphing, differential and integral calculus of one variable and to interpret and solve simple, real world problems using these skills.

Rationale
This unit is intended to cater for the needs of students whose background in mathematics is either weak or does not reach the equivalent of Senior Mathematics B. It is intended to provide the concepts and skills needed for successful study of those units within the university which assume a background equivalent to Senior Mathematics B. This unit is incompatible with a grade of High Achievement in Senior Mathematics B.
Aims
To develop your mathematical skills in and understanding of algebra, functions and graphing, differential and integral calculus of one variable and to interpret and solve simple, real world problems using these skills.
Objectives
On successful completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Solve straightforward equations and draw and interpret graphs of one independent variable.
2. Understand the concepts involved with functions and functional notation and in particular know the properties associated with quadratic, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions and applications of same.
3. Understand the concepts involved with rates of change, derivatives, maxima, minima and integration.
4. Engage in analytical thinking skills and communicate clearly and concisely in mathematical language.
Content
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The motivation, structure and development of the concepts and techniques in this unit are based on examples and applications.
During lectures you will see key concepts, results, examples, and exercises, with the opportunity for participation and interaction.
You will be introduced to new sections by exploring and understanding your existing knowledge which will then be formalised and developed.
The unit will involve a mixture of formal teaching and small group practical activities. You will be expected to undertake a high level of skills practice in your own time. You will be given feedback on your progress within the unit.
Note that this unit is being taught concurrently with an undergraduate offering of the same subject. University policy permits that postgraduate and undergraduate students attend the same lectures. Separate workshop/discussion groups will be provided for postgraduate students where numbers allow. As a postgraduate student you will be required to complete separate or additional assessment.
Assessment
All assessment in this unit is skills-based and operational assessment. The focus is on problem-solving skills using operational knowledge and understanding of key concepts, techniques and procedures.
The assessment package is carefully designed to help you manage and optimise your learning throughout the semester, allowing for different individual situations and capabilities. The assessment package is designed to help you develop your understanding and skills throughout the semester, aiming for achievement of the synergies and synthesis of the unit by the end of semester.Formative feedback is provided throughout the semester on individual, group and class work in verbal and written forms. Timely summative feedback is provided on all assessment, consisting of annotation of written work to assist students improve their understanding and skills and model solutions to representative exercises and problems, including assessment items.

Problem Solving Task
Description:
This will consist of a number of components, spaced regularly throughout the semester, to develop the key operational skills and knowledge of the unit . In some cases, Problem Solving Tasks may involve online submission. There will be both in class and homework exercises for the purpose of skills development and you will receive feedback on your progress.
