Rationale

This unit builds upon the geography program to develop advanced understanding of social science fieldwork approaches, both in the field as well as using computer technology. A foundation in fieldwork and project design is provided, relevant to a wide range of professions within the geography field. Students develop skills in research, as well as data collection and analysis techniques. The unit is suitable for those entering social science professions as well as teachers who will have to plan detailed field excursions for students.

Aims

The unit exposes students to geographical fieldwork approaches and provides a foundation in design for geographical studies. This includes the use of statistics and spatial technologies for data collection and analysis.

Objectives

The primary unit objectives are to:

1. Introduce techniques used in geographical fieldwork especially data collection methods as well as the construction of relevant background knowledge in the form of either an annotated bibliography or literature review
2. Introduce data analysis techniques for both physical and human geography
3. Design and present a fieldwork inquiry/ proposal for a specific project

Content

Contact sessions introduce students to contemporary geographical fieldwork (in human and physical geography fields), data sources (including computer-based resources) and methodologies. Local and regional case studies feature when appropriate.
The acquisition of fieldwork design skills underpins the unit content, and students will be required to design and present an inquiry/ proposal on a geographical topic of their choice (involving a basic literature review/annotated bibliography and methodology).
The specific program will depend on student enrolments and interests, and will be discussed at the beginning of the semester.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

The unit will offer flexibility in line with student needs but will basically follow a workshop format.
Students will be required to develop and present high quality oral and written presentations and consult individually with staff.

Assessment

Assessment is based on preparation for and presentation of the results of a major fieldwork study. Associated with this presentation is the development of skills in undertaking geography fieldwork and using appropriate technology to improve the fieldwork and presentation.Verbal and written
