Australia's interaction with Southeast Asia, including our most populous nearest neighbour, Indonesia, continues to increase in significance. This unit examines aspects of Southeast Asian geography, environment, society and culture, in a contemporary framework.

Rationale
Australia has been re-evaluating its role in Asia since Wolrd War 11. Australia has recognised that this is the Asian century and Australians need to know more about their neighbours - their lands, their people and their problems. Geographical studies can play a significant part in developing an Australian awareness of and relationship with Australia's most significant neighbour - South East Asia.
This unit will also develop essential geographical skills of mapping and statistical analysis.
Aims
This unit will provide a broad overview of the Southeast Asian region from a contemporary geographical perspective, including a range of critical environmental and social issues in the region. The unit is a valuable elective for International and global studies and geography in Arts, Education, Business and double degrees
Objectives
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1. locate and identify major geographical features and human patterns within South East Asia;
2. demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the main cultural traditions and social/political changes taking place in contemporary South East Asia;
3. identify key resource management issues facing the South East Asian region today, including population issues;
4. demonstrate critical awareness of the main environmental issues facing contemporary South East Asia;
5. critically discuss contemporary aspects of Australia's engagement with the South East Asian region.
6. demonstrate basic geographical skills in relation to map interpretation and statistical analysis.
Content
Major topics covered include:
- Physical landscape developments.
- Climate patterns.
- Vegetation patterns.
- Landuse patterns.
- Cultural development.
- The growth of cities.
- Contemporary environmental issues.
- Interactions between Australia and South East Asia.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Teaching approaches will include lectures and tutorials featuring videos and practical exercises. The videos and practical exercises will form an integral part of this unit.
Assessment
Please note: In order to gain a pass grade of 4 in this unit students must (a) reasonably attempt all assessment items and (b) gain a pass grade of 4 on the final examination.Students will receive both written and oral feedback on their assessment items.
