Sample subject outline - Semester 1 2013

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

The courses of the Science and Engineering Faculty seek to enable their graduates to practice as professionals in their respective disciplines. A major part of such practice is the instigation, management, monitoring, and reporting on design, engineering, and urban development projects. This unit offers you the experience at running such a project, but further builds upon that experience by explicating the relationship between theory and practice. For some students, this unit will be taken as the second of two 'project' units related to the same student project, as it develops a deeper understanding of theory and practice. In some cases this unit may be a co-requisite to the other 'project' unit.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to expose you to a set of integrated activities, each building upon the preceding, and culminating in a 'completed' project. You will apply skills and knowledge attained earlier in your course, and develop new abilities for application, to a real-world problem, industry based or research based, to simulate the design, development and management of a project solution.

Objectives

Discipline specific:
By the completion of this unit you should be able to demonstrate the following discipline specific capabilities:

1. engagement with, and application and development of, discrete segments of discipline knowledge
2. application of rigorous processes of scheduling, design, development, construction, testing, and analysis
3. exhibit written and/or oral capabilities appropriate to professional practice
4. critically discuss the relationship between theoretical skills and knowledge about your discipline, and the practical application of same in a professional project context

Content

The content of this unit will include aspects of research design, research methodology, project management, discipline knowledge, report writing, data analysis and presentation.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

These times are to be negotiated with the Academic Supervisor if they are not facilitated in a weekly Lecture/tutorial.

Learning Approaches:
Learning approaches will cover the following: Problem based learning, Self-learning, Individual learning, Reflective, Exposition

Assessment

Assessment will be based on the practical application of skills related to the development of research questions and objectives, critical analysis of research publications, application of a qualitative or quantitative research methodology, collection of data and presentation of results, analysis of data, formulation of conclusions and writing up of the research in a professional and academic manner.Continuous formative assessment in the form of assistance and feedback will be offered by teaching staff and tutors during the course of lectures and tutorials to assist with developing your research and final report.
