This unit is usually taken in the final year of study. Students complete an individual project involving the application of skills and knowledge attained during the earlier years of their degree program. For some students, this unit will be taken one of two 'project' units related to the same student project; in such cases this unit may be a pre-requisite or co-requisite to the second unit (or a follow-on from the first unit). The final ‘deliverable’ for this unit may vary for each discipline and details will be provided in lectures/tutorials and on the Blackboard website.

Rationale
The courses of the Science and Engineering Faculty seek to enable you to practice as professionals in your respective disciplines. A major part of such practice is the instigation, management, monitoring, and reporting on design, engineering, and urban development projects. This unit offers you experience at running such a project. For some students, this unit will be taken as the first of two 'project' units related to the same student project; in such cases this unit may be a prerequisite or corequisite to the second unit.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to expose you to a set of integrated activities, each building upon the preceding, and culminating in a 'completed' project. You will apply skills and knowledge attained earlier in your course, and develop new abilities for application, to a real-world problem, industry based or research based, to simulate the design, development and management of a project solution.

By the completion of this unit you should be able to demonstrate the following discipline specific capabilities:
1. engagement with, and application and development of, discrete segments of discipline knowledge
2. application of rigorous processes of scheduling, design, development, construction, testing, and analysis
3. exhibit written and/or oral capabilities appropriate to professional practice
Content
The content of this unit will include aspects of research design, research methodology, project management, discipline knowledge, report writing, data analysis and presentation.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Lectures: 2 hours per week (depending on discipline)
Teaching mode
This unit involves some activities taught as lectures, and others through a series of tutorials and/or workshops at set times, as appropriate to the particular project, and as negotiated with the unit teaching staff. Students are expected to make contact with their academic supervisor at negotiated times. These times are to be negotiated with the Academic Supervisor if they are not facilitated in a weekly Lecture/tutorial.

Learning approaches will cover the following: Problem based learning, Self-learning, Individual learning, Reflective, Exposition
Assessment
Assessment will be based on the practical application of skills related to the development of research questions and objectives, critical analysis of research publications, application of a qualitative or quantitative research methodology, collection of data and presentation of results, analysis of data, formulation of conclusions and writing up of the research in a professional and academic manner.
