Animation incorporates conventions and interpretations of dynamic structure in space and time. Core skills and knowledge of drawing provide an essential foundation for existing and evolving modes for construction and presenting animated kinetic images. The discipline of animation requires a diverse range of traditional drawing skills that have been introduced in the prerequisite unit and are now translated into moving images. The emphasis of this unit focuses on the conventions of dynamic animated images in kinetic applications.

Animation incorporates conventions and interpretations of dynamic structure in space and time. Core skills and knowledge of drawing provide an essential foundation for existing and evolving modes for construction and presenting animated kinetic images. The discipline of animation requires a diverse range of traditional drawing skills that have been introduced in the prerequisite unit and are now translated into moving images. The emphasis of this unit focuses on the conventions of dynamic animated images in kinetic applications.

Aims

In this unit you will bring together the skills of drawing and animation to form complex animated images through simple storytelling. This unit aims to contribute to your development of the following graduate capabilities:
- knowledge and skills pertinent to animation
- critical, creative and analytical thinking, and effective problem solving
- demonstrating the capacity for self-assessment of your learning needs and achievements
- characteristics of self-reliance, including the ability to take initiative and to embrace innovation.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Develop appropriate strategies, processes and knowledge of traditions, materials, mode, software and hardware for drawing as narrative.
2. Apply animation concepts and skills in the process of producing animated works.
3. Develop critical/reflective frameworks for the contextualisation of personal animation and artistic practice.

Content

Through the practice of drawing and the informed observation of selected works, you are expected to further develop skills and confidence in your own practice in the genre of historical and contemporary animation. Your drawings will be completed for application in a presentation of figurative movement(s) in a simple physical setting.
Topics:
1. Storytelling and development of storyboards.
2. Form, space, visual weight, movement and spatial relationships.
3. Systems and conventions of drawing for animated presentation.
4. Conventions of drawing for character development.
5. Traditional and contemporary practice.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

1. Studio traditions, linked with group and individual instruction.
2. Demonstrations of media and technical applications.
3. Tutorials focussing on traditional and contemporary practice.
4. Encouragement of studio practice beyond university settings.
5. Presentions have proven to be a very effective motivational tool as you get to critically reflect on what other students are thinking and exploring.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date <without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

SUMMATIVE AND FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
This unit is presented as a studio teaching model epitomised by individual instruction as continuous formative assessment/response. Feedback on component development of your major project will be provided through a series of evaluation tasks assessed in weeks 2, 4, 8 and 9. The assessment is geared to keeping you productive by enabling you to realise achievable objectives leading to the finished work. Note: All field notes, journals and personal research including all still drawings used to make the animations should be kept in either a digital or hard copy form to be submitted with assignment 2 at the end of semester.
