This unit will provide you with an introduction to the theoretical concepts and clinical principles that underpin the care of patients undergoing procedures in medical radiations departments. Patient care involves a team approach from a variety of health professionals and this unit will expose you to effective strategies for communication and interpersonal skills.

Rationale
To be an effective member of the health care team medical radiation technologists must be able to respond appropriately to the health care needs of patients, initiate prescribed action in emergency situations and provide basic health information relating to their practice. They must comprehend the dynamics of interpersonal and subjective aspects of human endeavour as part of these interactions.
Aims
This unit will provide you with an introduction to the theoretical concepts and clinical principles that underpin the care of patients undergoing procedures in medical radiations departments. Patient care involves a team approach from a variety of health professionals and this unit will expose you to effective strategies for communication and interpersonal skills.
Objectives
By the end of the unit, students will be able to:
1. Evaluate dynamics involved with communication and cooperation (or lack thereof) between individuals .and develop effective communication strategies in providing health services for individuals and groups with diverse backgrounds.
2. Discuss the basic physical and psychological health care needs of patients receiving diagnostic medical imaging or radiotherapy services.
3. Discuss the role of the medical radiation technologist in providing effective patient care and identify ethical and legal responsibilities of the medical radiation technologist in providing a professional service to patients.
4. Discuss appropriate resuscitation techniques in emergency situation.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of a safe environment for all individuals in medical radiation areas including how to initiate, maintain and terminate effective infection control measures appropriate to medical radiations.

Principles of Patient Care.
Professional roles, ethics and legal implications of practice.
Principles of Reflection
Basic health care needs of individuals seeking medical imaging and radiographic therapeutic health services.
Developing effective care strategies for populations including individuals with special needs.
Emergency responses in the health care environment.
Infection control and precautions.
Introduction to manual handling.
Developmental and psycho-emotional issues for health care; special needs clients
Maximizing outcomes in health care by treating the whole person.
Communication skills; non-verbal communication and verbal communication; developing better listening skills.
Organisational dynamics and health care teams.
Understanding communication strategies for different population groups including paediatric patients, geriatric patients and patients from diverse backgrounds
Better patient-professional communication; maximising patient satisfaction and compliance.
Communicating in difficult situations; assertion and non-defensive communication.
Problem solving and decision making skills; attitudes and values.
Time and stress management
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Lectures; demonstrations; video trigger films and discussionsessions. Students undertake communication tasks with their peers as a group activity and reflect on the efficacy of the tasks.
Assessment
All assessment contributes to your unit result. All students must demonstrate a satisfactory understanding of handling techniques, and submit confirmation of completion of the online activities,including the Qld Health Student Orientation activities inorder to successfully complete this unit. Students must achieve at least 55% to be awarded a passing grade.You will receive feedback on your online activities and reflective journal.
