Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

In order to effectively utilise computational media technology in your creative/design practice you must have an understanding of 'the medium'. It is this understanding that will enable you to successfully engage with technology in your own practice, to formulate solutions to design problems and to produce high quality technical and aesthetic outcomes.

Aims

This unit aims to provide you with an understanding of the principles of computer graphics; digital media; interactive media; contemporary methods of publishing and distribution; and contemporary software applications and the related principles.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. explain practical skills with contemporary media creation and editing software applications;
2. employ the principles of digital media, contemporary production processes, publishing and distribution methods;
3. evaluate the technologies studied;
4. describe how tools and technology influence the design process;
5. select and apply relevant technologies to design problems.

Content

The unit addresses content such as:
media technologies used in the contemporary interactive multimedia projects, including HTML and CSS, computer graphics and images; digital media formats; encoding and decoding; media synchronisation; media management; contemporary acquisition, editing and delivery technologies, and basic programming techniques.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Lectures are supported by multimedia presentations, selected readings, handouts and case studies. Tutorials deliver key practical material and consist of problem based learning activities and supervised practical workshop sessions to explore and adapt concepts.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
