Units
Print Media
Unit code: KIB338
Contact hours: 3 per week, plus several workshops during semester
Credit points: 12
Information about fees and unit costs
This unit builds on the visual communication and graphic design units to develop specialist skills in design layout and the creative production of print media. It will introduce the theory and principles involved in combining text, image and design elements into a coherent design layout and will extend this theory into practice through the development of advanced design publishing techniques. Theoretical understandings gained through lectures will be augmented with technical skills in workshops, and applied to the production of team-based, professional quality print projects in design studios.

Sample subject outline - Semester 2 2012
Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
You will continue to investigate and develop visual communication and design knowledge, and conceptual frameworks formed during the units Graphic Design and Visual Communication. Your knowledge-base will be further expanded to include the theory, principles and experimentation in combining text, image and design elements into a coherent design layout. You will explore and experiment with different print techniques, and reflect upon the role of print media in our contemporary society and its integration with other media. In order to prepare you for a design-related career this unit will allow you to apply creative thinking, research and project management skills in the development of a major print media outcome.
Aims
This unit aims to build on the knowledge and skills learnt in earlier visual communication units to enable you to respond to graphic design problems in a professional manner. It will do this through experimentation with print techniques, and through design projects that will refine wour abilities to professionally respond to a client brief, develop innovative solutions and implement the production of print outcomes.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Reflect upon the new roles of print media in contemporary society.
2. Create print solutions that efficiently respond to a brief and integrate with other media both functionally and aesthetically.
3. Creatively relate relevant print production and output processes to the planning and design of visual communication material.
4. Apply advanced graphic design knowledge and techniques to solve complex visual communication problems within fixed deadlines and adhering to the client's brief
5. Apply technical competency in industry standard techniques and software to the production of print outcomes.
Content
This unit addresses content such as:
- the role of print media in contemporary societies in relation to the expansion of digital media;
- the evolution of print technologies and production;
- creative integrated approaches to communication using print media;
- reflections upon design processes that generate innovative outcomes based on client briefs and under strict deadlines;
- review and application of computer software packages associated with print production, project management, and presentation; and
- ethical behaviour in the graphic design industry.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
This unit is delivered via workshops, tutorials, lectures and discussions. Lectures will introduce you to the theoretical aspects, concepts and principles of print media. Workshops and tutorials will explore these concepts, foster experimentation with different print techniques and help you develop the practical skills required to create effective design layouts and having them successfully printed.
This unit is co-ordinated from the QUT Blackboard web site where a range of support materials will be published.
Assessment
LATE ASSESSMENT
An assessment item submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time and you do not have an approved extension, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.
