As creative practitioners within a highly networked technological society, it is important to develop a critical understanding of how the application of technology influences modes of communication, production processes and creative practices, particularly within the Creative Industries. This unit provides an introductory overview of the philosophies underlying applications of technology, and critically examines current applications in order to explore creative visions of future technology.

This unit serves as an introduction to immersive interactive technology and to issues related to design, effective communication and interaction within digital environments. It offers an initial background for those of you interested in areas such as designing communication, hypermedia narrative, interactive multimedia forms, games design, mixed reality applications and creative / interactive writing.
Aims
This unit aims to provide the skills to explore interaction, information and sensory/media design within a constructive digital environment.
Objectives
On completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1. understand human computer activity within narrative game / experience based environments;
2. apply skills with specific computer systems and software packages;
3. articulate an understanding of contemporary issues in the field and application to the creative industries through both written and digital forms of expression;
4. sustain a self directed line of inquiry through your own practice.
Content
This unit addresses content such as:
- Effective communication design for immersive environments;
- Designing performance in immersive environments;
- Information architectures;
- Strengths and limitations of combining diverse media;
- Critical language use related to types of communication; and
- Design as it related to effective communication.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Lectures deliver theoretical background in support of final project and critical written work. Workshops provide skills in immersive platform and explore technical possibilities within constructive environments. You will be provided with opportunities to explore collaborative team projects and individual critical exploration.
Assessment
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.
