Sample subject outline - Semester 2 2012

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

This unit introduces you to a greater complexity in interior construction and services. It focuses on interior architectural systems and their role in enhancing the quality of the interior environment and people's associated interactions and experiences. It introduces key aspects of interior environments to complement the 'real-life' projects introduced in the design units.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to develop an understanding of the relationship between design, environmental quality and technology.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to demonstrate:

  1. knowledge of building services and associated codes and standards.

  2. an understanding of the relationship between interior architectural services and the environmental quality and experience.

  3. the application of interior construction and services knowledge to design tasks.

  4. an awareness of the collaborative nature of the design, the construction process, and environmental conditions.

  5. documentation skills for small commercial interior projects and the integration of services.

Content

Topics covered in this unit include:

  1. Introduction to building services including natural and artificial lighting, power, ventilation and air conditioning, communication systems, and noise control and acoustics.

  2. Interior environmental quality and the impact of lighting, sound, ventilation and the like.

  3. Building programs, professional consultants responsibilities, the law, codes and standards, site/context analysis, and requirements

  4. Analysis and recording of small scale commercial interiors in relation to the integration of services, technology, and design

  5. Relevant documentation modes such as 2D and 3D CAD

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Teaching Mode: Hours per week: 4
Lecture: 1
Tutorial: 3

Learning Approaches:
The unit will involve tutorials, studio exercises and integrated projects to explore key content areas through action learning. Site visits may also be incorporated. Strategies to be adopted in teaching the unit and promoting your learning include: externalisation and explicit imagining, representing and testing of ideas and proposals for projects and exercises; and the involvement of you in practical exercises which encourage the integration of theory and practice, as well as, self evaluation and reflection.

Learning approaches will cover the following:
Lectures and seminars, self-directed learning, team based learning, experiential learning, reflective practice, exposition, and presentation.

Assessment

Assessment will be based on:
a) Formal assessment in this unit will involve three projects relating to the three core areas of content.
b) Studio exercises will also be required to assist in the development of the basic skills. These will be submitted as a report.
c) Summative aspect of assessment will be provided by the allocation of grades for projects that will contribute to the end-of-semester grade for the unit. Projects and exercises will occur progressively throughout the semester and will be weighted in accordance with your developmental capabilities and unit objectives.
d) The weighting of all assessment items will be identified during Week 1. The weighting of all exercises & projects will be based on the unit's activity objectives.
e) Assessment will be criterion-based rather than norm-referenced and the emphasis will be on process, as well as, product. The criteria will be circulated as part of the project information and you will be encouraged to use the assessment criteria as constraints for testing your decisions.Assessment will also be formative in the sense that you will be provided with feedback connected to the project and exercise activities during the studio sessions.

Risk assessment statement

You will undertake lectures and/or tutorials in the traditional classrooms and lecture theatres. As such, there are no extraordinary workplace health and safety issues associated with these components of the unit, however, may be required to undertake lecturer-led and individual site visits to construction sites. Prior to these site visits, you are required to attend a construction safety induction session and obtain a safety induction card. This safety induction session introduces you to the relevant workplace health and safety requirements of Queensland construction sites. A safety induction course is provided by the school in the first week of the first semester. If you do not have, or cannot produce a safety induction card, you will not be allowed to undertake the site visits.
