Sample subject outline - Semester 1 2013

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

This unit extends the residential design and manual drafting conventions covered in DTB202. It introduces you to 2D digital drafting and commercial interior environments. These skills will form an essential component for technical applications in all future units.

Aims

The aim of this unit is for you to further develop your competency in communicating technical information of basic construction and detailing of commercial interiors such that you will be able to apply this knowledge to project work relating to interior design scenarios.

Objectives

At the end of this unit you should be able to:
1. Identify and apply knowledge and technical skills of basic building principles, construction and finishes of interior building environments
2. Apply principles of ergonomics to enable functional technical design outcomes in your approach to a range of interior design challenges.
3. Apply relevant codes and standards that inform the design and construction of interior environments.
4. Communicate technical information to industry standards using digital and drafting media in a number of contexts and modes
5. Test and explore the inherent properties of a selection of materials and apply your findings as part of the creative design process

Content

This unit introduces you to core technological concepts including:

1. basic construction relating to non-residential interior projects
2. the process of detailing and its link to the expression of a design
3. the role of standards and codes for interior construction and finishes
4. ergonomic principles and their application to the design of spaces and furniture
5. modes of communication including freehand sketches, hand drawn techniques, and CAD in relation to technical aspects of interior design

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Teaching Mode:
Hours per week: 4
Lecture: 1
Tutorial: 3

The unit will involve you in lectures, tutorials, site visits, studio exercises, and integrated projects. Strategies to be adopted in teaching the unit and promoting your learning include: collaboratively sharing ideas and proposals for projects and exercises in studios; and active participation in practical exercises which encourage the integration of theory, practice and reflection.

Assessment

Assessment will be based on activities and projects introduced within a studio context. It will include two projects (modelling and design documentation) and a workbook undertaken throughout the semester.
Assessment will be criterion-based and the emphasis will be on process, as well as, product.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

Faculty Assessment Information
To access the Creative Industries Faculty Assessment Information please refer to the Blackboard site for this unit.
Assessment will also be formative in the sense that you will be provided with oral feedback connected to the project and exercise activities during the studio sessions. You will also receive written feedback on your design documentation and activities.

Risk assessment statement

You will undertake lectures and/or tutorials in the traditional classrooms and lecture theatres. As such, there are no extraordinary workplace health and safety issues associated with these components of the unit, however, you may be required to undertake lecturer-led and individual site visits to construction sites. Prior to these site visits, you are required to attend a construction safety induction session and obtain a safety induction card (White Card). This safety induction session introduces you to the relevant workplace health and safety requirements of Queensland construction sites. A safety induction course is provided by the school in the first week of the first semester. If you do not have, or cannot produce a safety induction card, you will not be allowed to undertake the site visits.

As this unit requires you to visit construction sites, you need to take your General Site Safety Card and to wear safety boots and a hard hat. You will be required to undergo a specific safety briefing at the site. If you do not act in accordance with the requirements of the Workplace Health and Safety Act will be asked to leave the construction site.
