Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

This unit introduces you to the techniques and conventions for electronic and manual communication of technical material. These are fundamental skills required by an interior designer.

Aims

The aim of this unit is for you to develop sound competency in communicating technical information of basic construction and detailing of interiors in order that you will be able to apply this knowledge to project work relating to future interior design scenarios.

Objectives

By the completion of this unit, you should be able to demonstrate the following at beginning level:

  1. a knowledge of drawing conventions
  2. skills in manual drawing of construction details
  3. an understanding of basic construction principles in relation to residential design
  4. an ability to integrate technical knowledge with communication conventions and procedures
  5. competency in communicating through written reports or essays

Content

The basic principles of three core activities of a professional designer are introduced. Topics covered in this unit include:

  • Knowledge of and representation of building construction

  • Introduction to 2D CAD drawing

  • Writing techniques such as report preparation

  • Interior design in relation to structural systems, materials, technologies and relevant legislation with specific emphasis on domestic building construction

  • Ergonomic principles, site measure, examples of construction, identification of types of structures

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Teaching Mode: Hours per week:4
Lecture: 1
Tutorial: 3

Learning Approaches:
The unit will involve you in lectures, tutorials, site visits, studio exercises and integrated project. Strategies to be adopted in teaching the unit and promoting your learning include: externalisation and explicit imagining, representing and testing of ideas and proposals for projects and exercises; and the involvement of you in practical exercises which encourage the integration of theory and practise and self evaluation and reflection.

Assessment

Overview of Assessment
Assessment will be based on:

  • Formal assessment in this unit will involve three projects relating to the three core areas of content.

  • Studio exercises will also be required to assist in the development of the basic skills. These will be submitted at the semesters end as a folio.

  • Summative aspect of assessment will be provided by the allocation of grades for projects that will contribute to the end-of-semester grade for the unit. Projects and exercises will occur progressively throughout the semester and will be weighted in accordance with student developmental capabilities and unit objectives.

  • Assessment will be criterion-based rather than norm-referenced and the emphasis will be on process, as well as, product. The criteria will be circulated as part of the project information and you will be encouraged to use the assessment criteria as constraints for testing their decisions.
  • Assessment will also be formative in the sense that you will be provided with feedback connected to the project and exercise activities during the studio sessions.

    Risk assessment statement

You will undertake lectures and/or tutorials in the traditional classrooms and lecture theatres. As such, there are no extraordinary workplace health and safety issues associated with these components of the unit, however, you may be required to undertake lecturer-led and individual site visits to construction sites. Prior to these site visits, you are required to attend a construction safety induction session and obtain a safety induction card. This safety induction session introduces you to the relevant workplace health and safety requirements of Queensland construction sites. A safety induction course is provided by the school in the first week of the first semester. If you do not have, or cannot produce a safety induction card you will not be allowed to undertake the site visits.

As this unit requires you to visit construction sites, you need to take your General Site Safety Card and to wear safety boots and a hard hat. You will be required to undergo a specific safety briefing at the site. If you do not act in accordance with the requirements of the Workplace Health and Safety Act you will be asked to leave the construction site.
