The unit will focus on the introduction of new products into the market. It will provide the students with an overview of the relationship between product design and commercialisation. It will provide an overview of strategy development where the aim is to meet consumer expectations, whilst achieving corporate objectives. The major topics covered in this unit include:

Rationale
The unit will focus on the introduction of new products into the market. It will provide you with an overview of the relationship between product design and commercialisation. You will also be given an overview of strategy development where the aim is to meet consumer expectations, whilst achieving corporate objectives. Launching new products into the market requires a sound understanding of product development tools and methods. Therefore this unit will draw on your understanding of design process and compliment this with an understanding of the issues surrounding the translation of a concept into a marketable product or service.
Aims
The unit aims to provide background knowledge of management, financial and marketing parameters surrounding the development and commercialisation of consumer products.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to :
1. demonstrate an understanding of new product development processes
2. demonstrate understanding of management and economic issues surrounding the introduction of products to the market place
3. confidently evaluate a design concept within a commerical framework

The unit will consist of practical exercises, lectures, discussions and case studies. It will provide you with an understanding of new product development and how this relates to industrial design within a corporate environment.

Description:
A 2 hour mid semester exam will be held in week 6, which will require you to demonstrate your knowledge of New Product Development Theory and its application as a design tool. You will be provided with a hypothetical design solution, which you will be required to describe and explore in terms of the theory presented.

Description:
In groups of 2, you will be required to bring to class a design concept and develop a final design solution for the launch of the idea into the market place. You will be required to develop your design concept further through the application of business analysis tools to generate a range of design concepts. You then to develop a Business Case for the launch of your new venture as well as the pitch and presentation of the concept. You are required to present and justify your decisions for your proposed organizational structure, launch strategy, IP strategy, business model, funding requirements and projected returns and risk as a written business case. You will be required to pitch your new venture idea to an external panel of experts.
