Unit code: DNB401
Contact hours: 4
Credit points: 12
Information about fees and unit costs

Industrial design advances design knowledge gained in DNB201 Industrial design 2.The unit introduces how various design processes interact, in complex problems such as sustainable transportation systems. Through collaborative projects students will be exposed to: design research; design innovation; communication skills; integration of design processes, manufacturing technologies and application transfer of design principle mechanisms to solve real world problems.

Sample subject outline - Semester 2 2012

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

Possibly the most difficult learning transition in Industrial Design education for students is to acquire the design knowledge and communication skills used on a daily basis in practice. This unit will explore the designer/client relationship through role modelling and project based learning, continuing the emphasis on design innovation and processes established in DNB301 Industrial Design 3.

Aims

You will continue the development of critical and analytical design thinking within cultural, environmental and global contexts with special emphasis on the development of product based design thinking within a system based framework.

Objectives

By the completion of this unit you should be able to:

1. Develop effective design synergies to solve complex human environment problems
2. Research project specific criteria to develop innovative thinking and processing of design information
3. Gain knowledge of industrial design practice through application of professional design briefs
4. Investigate built environment problems using integrated design methodologies.
5. Comprehend professional design standards and practices

Content

The major topics covered in this unit include:

  • Designer client relationships

  • Design briefs and proposals

  • Contextualisation of design processes

  • Climate change and its effect on the future of industrial design

  • Product based thinking

  • System based thinking
  • Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Teaching Mode: Hours per week: 4 hours
    Lecture: 1 hour
    Studio/Tutorial: 3 hours

    Learning Approaches
The design studio is your key learning environment where we work together to attain professional design status. Your active participation in studio and a sense of personal responsibility for development as a designer are essential for success.
Your learning in this unit will focus on sustainable design projects that have real world significance, delivered in a studio setting.
Projects will be discussed and feedback given to individual groups at critical stages in their design's development.
During the semester you will have the opportunity to present your ideas, concepts and final designs for discussion with peers, staff and consultants.
Collaboration is a key component in this unit observable in seamless group presentations.

    Assessment

Assessment will be based on three assignments each of these will require a range of analytical skills including design synthesis and evaluation presented in a structured order that will inform the development of an industrial design process in response to specific project criteria. Each assignment will require you to engage in creative and critical thinking in order to develop an integrated design approach to problem solving.Tutors will offer you formative feedback to assist in your project work during the semester especially at critical times before and after assignment submissions.
