QUT Course Structure
Industrial Design 3

Unit code: DNB301
Contact hours: 4 per week
Credit points: 12
Information about fees and unit costs

This unit offers creative opportunities to design and develop new and innovative products in the field of industrial design. It uses design research and methodologies to inspire innovative and sustainable practices both in the built and natural environments. Thorough user and context research, design development, brief development and existing market research lead to design projects that engage with issues of context, biomimicry, technology and design principle transfers from nature. Learning and teaching activities are spread across lectures, tutorials, workshops and studio based practices.

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

Design is the core activity of industrial design. This unit advances design process knowledge gained in First Year with an emphasis on innovation and introduces the role that design methods, proces, professional documentation, manufacturing and computer aided design play in industrial design practice.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to provide you with new ways of thinking about design as a process from idea to market. You will continue the development of critical thinking within the context of industrial design with special emphasis on the practice and theory of design information and its transfer into new product/market applications.

Objectives

On completion of this Unit you should be able to demonstrate ability to:

  1. Research, critically evaluate and discuss industrial design information and technologies from a variety of sources.
  2. Adapt ideas, principles and technologies from different sources to produce design innovation.
  3. Rapdily and effectively explore moderately complex product forms and concepts using analogue, digital and prototyping media.
  4. Integrate knowledge of design process, user and context story, product function and ergonomics gained in previous semesters to design useful, attractive and meaningful products of moderate complexity.
  5. Develop, manage and present project brief and schedule at a beginer level
  6. Pursuasively, succinctly and attractively communicate moderately complex product designs solutions.

Content

Topics covered in this unit include:

  • application transfer design (ATD) method
  • introduction to biomimicry as a tool for innovation
  • the design spiral methodology analysing natural principles
  • project brief and schedule at a begginer level
  • observation and innovation
  • usability / ergonomic principles (cognitive, physical, emotional) to innovative products
  • representation and communication of design ideas
  • application of prototyping in design conceptualisation
  • workshop practice in intermediate modelling techniques
  • setting up the design development record as a process of evaluation

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Your learning in this unit will be fostered by project based learning exercises delivered in a studio setting. Your work in the design studio will be supported by formal lectures, group tutorials, informative critiques and online resources.

From time to time you will be required to display your work for discussion in a peer setting giving you opportunity to explain your ideas and receive feedback to implement your project work.

Projects will be chosen for their ability to realise global trends which are further development in the studio. Formative and summative feedback will be given at key points throughout the semester to develop your knowledge of design and project based learning.

Teaching Mode: Hours per week
Lecture: 1
Studio/Tutorial: 3

Assessment

Assessment will be based on three assignments each of these will require a range of analysis synthesis and evaluation to be presented in a structured order that will inform the development of an industrial design process in response to a given brief. Each of these will require you to engage in creative and critical thinking in order to develop an integrated and seamless presentation.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

Faculty Assessment Information
To access the Creative Industries Faculty Assessment Information please refer to the Blackboard site for this unit.
Tutors will offer you formative feedback to assist in their project work during semester especially at critical times before and after assignment submissions.

Academic Honesty

QUT is committed to maintaining high academic standards to protect the value of its qualifications. To assist you in assuring the academic integrity of your assessment you are encouraged to make use of the support materials and services available to help you consider and check your assessment items. Important information about the university's approach to academic integrity of assessment is on your unit Blackboard site.

A breach of academic integrity is regarded as Student Misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties.

Resource materials

Participation in this unit will require you to regularly check the Blackboard site for electronic copies of notes and updates to materials previously specified in DNB201.
It is further recommended that you acquire a copy of: Lesko Jim, Industrial Design (materials and Manufacturing Guide) in the QUT book store GP.
The book covers most of second year required reading for design and manufacture and will be referred to in this unit.

Risk assessment statement

In this unit you will undertake lectures and tutorials in the design studios and lecture theatres As such there are no extraordinary workplace health and safety issues in the studio setting. However workshop activities are also associated with this unit therefore, therefore prior to workshop access, all students are required to attend workshop safety induction sessions that introduce safety regulations. Students who do not act in accordance with the requirements of the Workplace and Health and Safety Act will be asked to leave the workshop.
