Sample subject outline - Semester 2 2012

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

Landscape architecture is a broad field and landscape architects can work on a wide range of sites. This unit introduces a range of creative and technical techniques for engaging with specific sites. It builds on ideas and skills learnt in semester 1, providing a practical and creative introduction to site interpretation, representation and reflective design practice foundational to the course.

Aims

This unit aims to achieve:

a) sustained improvement in your graphic abilities;
b) sustained improvement in your site perception and understanding;
c) development of your ability in reflective and speculative design practice;
d) a practical appreciation of the link between creative visual practice and professional and technical representation.

Objectives

By the completion of this unit you should be able, at beginning level to demonstrate:

  1. demonstrate at an introductory level, the ability to effectively represent your design outcomes and processes through modelled, written, graphic and oral means
  2. demonstrate at an introductory level, knowledge of design principles and theories, and their application
  3. demonstrate at an introductory level, effective critical thinking and analytical processes to interpret problems
  4. demonstrate at an introductory level, creative problem solving to formulate innovative design propositions to specific briefs
  5. demonstrate where and when appropriate, ethical conduct, collaboration and independent self-management and accountability.

Content

Topics covered in this unit include:

1. Conceptions of site in landscape design;
2. The role of creative and technical methods of site interpretation and representation in art and landscape design;
3. The role of reflection and speculation in landscape design.

You will develop skills in spatial and site perception; in the development of creative and technical site interpretation and representation methods and their application; and in developing a reflective mode of design practice.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Four hours a week are allocated to this unit. The unit is delivered as a combination of:

  • 1/2 - 1hour illustrated lectures covering subject content at various times during semester; the agenda for this content may be subject to change.
  • Studio classes of 3 hours each per week comprising a combination of:

    In-class and on-site, hands-on workshops where you undertake tasks using different creative and technical interpretation and representation methods and techniques to explore the qualities of landscape sites; discussion, review, presentation and/or assessment of projects in progress. Studios enable learning best when students are actively engaged in doing, discussing, sharing with peers and tutors regularly and repeatedly. Prior learning from previous units and concurrent units will be incorporated.

    Learning Approaches:
    Learning approaches will cover the following:
    • Problem based learning through a series of site-related projects in an urban context to collectively address Learning Outcomes 1 to 5;

    • Individual learning through the completion of designated components of design projects;

    • Reflection through the use of peer to peer critique in the studio sessions.

    Assessment

    Assessment will be based on defined components of three design projects.

    Up-to-date expanded specifications of assessment will be lodged on Blackboard and should be checked regularly.Studio tutorials provide ongoing formative feedback. Assessment items will be marked in a timely fashion to give you ongoing feedback.
