Unit code: DAB710
Contact hours: 4 per week
Credit points: 12
Information about fees and unit costs

This unit offers an advanced level investigation into the field of design as applied to architecture, with particular focus on Urban Design issues that come to bear in the design of a building.
On completion of this unit you should be able to; demonstrate, through your project work, your understanding of cities and an awareness of the forces shaping their development. Demonstrate that you have developed critical, analytical and speculative research skills applicable to urban situations. Adopt a reasoned position in relation to an architectural problem and to argue, speculate and design from that position. Demonstrate judgement that enables the identification of design opportunities at an urban scale that inform architectural design decisions.

Rationale

Design is the core activity of architecture, and the architectural design studio is a major component of the architecture course. This advanced architectural design unit deals with synthesis and integration of knowledge and skills from various built environment domains. It offers an advanced level investigation into the field of design as applied to architecture, with particular focus on Urban Design issues that come to bear in the design of a building.

Aims

This unit aims at developing knowledge and understanding of design at the urban scale, as well as a sense of the potential for dialogue between context and site. The studio will focus on Brisbane as the context for the development of an understanding of research techniques and speculative enquiry appropriate at the scale of the city.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be aware of your current knowledge and abilities, and should have progressed in being able to demonstrate:

1. your understanding of cities and an awareness of the forces shaping their development.
2. that you have developed critical, analytical and speculative research skills applicable to urban situations.
3. an understanding of, and the ability to use, manipulate, manage and synthesise those aspects of architectural design that are influenced by complex urban context, established typologies and environmental sustainability.
4. awareness of a range of communication techniques and strategies.

Content

The major topics to be covered in this unit include the synthesis of:

  • urban analysis
  • morphology
  • context relationship
  • precedent research
  • typology
  • spatial quality
  • form
  • presentation techniques

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Teaching Mode: Hours per week: 4
Lecture: 1
Studio/Tutorial: 3

Your learning in this unit will be fostered predominantly by problem-based learning exercises, delivered in a studio setting. Your work in the design studio will be supported by formal lectures, group tutorials, and desk critiques of your work. On occasion you will be required to display your work for critiques in a group setting, giving you opportunity to explain your ideas and their implementation in your project work.

Assessment

Assessment will take the form of progressive or formative assessment and summative or final assessment. Formative assessment provides you with an indication of your performance to date and the direction you should be heading.

The assessment criteria are aligned with the specific listed objectives of the unit. The assessment criteria sheet for both projects will be made available on Blackboard.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

Faculty Assessment Information
To access the Creative Industries Faculty Assessment Information please refer to the Blackboard site for this unit.
Formative feedback will be given at key times throughout the semester to foster the development of problem-based learning projects.
