Architectural Design 3
Unit code: DAB310
Contact hours: 4 per week
Credit points: 12
Information about fees and unit costs
This intermediate level unit in architectural design uses developmental exercises to enhance student perceptions of the built environment in a problem based learning environment. Design problems of increased complexity are tackled through a process of abstraction, experimentation, representation, imagination, and testing. Advanced orthogonal drawing, freehand sketching, presentation graphics, documentation techniques, and model making all form part of the unit content. Teaching and learning activities are spread across lectures, tutorials, workshops and studio based activities.

Sample subject outline - Semester 1 2013
Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
Design is arguably the core activity of architecture. As such, design is a major component of the architecture course. This design unit exposes architectural design as a rigorous process with measurable qualities, and is therefore offered in the second year of the course to build on skills introduced in the foundation units of DAB110 & DAB210.
Aims
This unit aims to provide you with an ability to develop architectural designs with particular focus on aspects of problem solving through an appreciation of architectural criteria of Logic, Space & Form. The unit also aims to develop your ability to research and investigate with emphasis on aspects of dwelling and human habitation.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
- Exhibit an understanding of, and ability to effectively retrieve relevant information from a comprehensive range of sources through research & investigation.
- Exhibit a capacity and ability using analytical, critical & creative thinking, to perceive design as a process, which is underpinned by methodology in problem solving, addressing divergent criteria of Logic, Space & Form.
- Exhibit an understanding of, and ability to effectively problem-solve and manipulate those aspects of architectural design that influence the experience of human dwelling, working independently and collaboratively.
- Represent and communicate ideas of an architectural nature through the development of competencies in a range of communication and documentation techniques & strategies.
Content
Topics covered in this unit include:
- Architectural precedent analysis
- Problem solving & design methodology
- Ergonomics
- Landscape & siting
- Inside-out spaces
- Experiments in living
- Public and private spaces
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Your learning in this unit will be fostered predominantly by problem-based learning exercises, delivered in a studio setting. Your work in the design studio will be supported by formal lectures, group workshops, and desk critiques of your work. Collaborative learning will occur through interactive exercises conducted in the design studio. Formative feedback will be given at key times throughout the semester to foster the development of problem-based learning projects. On occasion you will be required to display your work for critiques in a group setting, giving you opportunity to explain your ideas and their implementation in your project work.
Teaching Mode:
Hours per week:
Lecture: 1
Studio/Tutorial: 3
Assessment
Assessment will be based on three problem-based learning assignments. Each of these will require a range of analytical exercises to be performed in a structured order that will inform the development of an architectural proposition in response to a given brief. Processes and methods of managing creative thinking will be guided through studio workshops that build up to provide a body of knowledge that will inform the design assignments. Formative feedback will be offered during the semester at weekly tutorials as feedback for assignment work in progress.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.
