Rationale
This unit is offered as one of the Creative Industries Honours unit options for students in the Honours program KK53. It is specifically designed for those students doing Honours in either Creative Writing or Literary Studies. It aims to acquaint you with theories relevant to your selected research project(s) and help you develop practical, professional, critical and analytical skills relevant to these.
Aims
This unit aims to support you in developing a critical understanding of your Honours thesis, in particular in relation to advanced theory in authorship studies. This unit will enable you to identify and apply relevant literary and cultural theory, and assist in the development of your textual and discourse analysis skills.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1.Develop a critical and/or creative work that demonstrates an understanding of research in the field of either Creative Writing or Literary Studies.
2.Design a theoretical framework for the creative and/or critical work.
3.Discuss the relationships between theory and practice, and their applications and articulation in your work.
4.Critically reflect on your processes in planning, developing and writing the work and articulate the contribution to the field the work may make.
Content
This unit addresses content such as:
1. Theory and practice in Creative Writing and Literary Studies.
2. Authorship criticism and theory.
3. Textual and discourse analysis.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The unit will be delivered fortnightly via a mix of interactive seminar presentations and workshops during which you will be involved in writing activities, structured discussions and reflective practices related to the production of a critical work in either Creative Writing or Literary Studies. Some of the seminars will be delivered by a number of contributing staff from the creative writing, professional writing and literary studies areas. Supplementary information will be made available on Blackboard and the CMDB as will all presentation notes and other relevant material. There will be collaboration between the teaching staff and supervisors to ensure that unit content contributes positively to the ongoing relationship between student and supervisor.
Assessment
The summative assessment for this unit is structured around written abilities in communicating knowledge of the materials being presented specifically as they relate to your creative and/or critical work for the unit. Formative as well as summative feedback will be provided for each of the assessment pieces.You will receive formative feedback from lecturers and peers in the form of fortnightly oral responses to scheduled workshop activity.
Summative feedback will be provided by formal assessment of your work, measured against specific criteria identified as relevant to the learning outcomes.
