This unit is the third in a series of three advanced practice units in creative writing. These units allow students to significantly advance their writing practice and associated critical and editorial skills. In this unit, students will work on an already-commenced, sustained work of fiction in the genre/s of their choice including poetry, short fiction, long-form fiction (eg: elements of a novel length work) and non-fiction with a specific emphasis on structural editing, redrafting, concluding and marketing sustained pieces – including contemporary writing and publishing industry issues. With the ability to articulate out of the other advanced practice units, this unit gives students a unique opportunity to work on a sustained piece of fiction for up to a year and a half. Intensive studio-based work, professionally-conducted mentorship opportunities, self-directed creative practice and critical peer evaluation characterise the teaching and learning in this unit.

Rationale
The market for becoming a published writer is very competitive and this unit provides a unique learning opportunity to develop the ability to write a sustained body of work. This capstone unit is the final in a series of three advanced creative writing practice units and it guides students in developing a professional plan and positioning themselves in the writing and publishing industry.
Aims
The aim of this capstone unit is to provide you with the opportunity to identify markets for your creative practice and to be supported in sending your work out for professional consideration, or to create your own pathways for publication. The unit also allows you to complete the writing project you have been working on over the past two Advanced Practice units.
Objectives
On completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1. Identify professional markets for your creative practice and strategically target those markets.
2. Critically reflect on your writing practice and articulate the intentions you have for your work.
3. Synthesise knowledge and skills acquired through previous advanced practice units.
4. Compose a sustained creative work that meets real world publishing requirements.
Content
This unit includes content such as:
- Analysis of suitable markets and pathways for the publication of your work
- Identifying competitions, awards and other opportunities etc that will further your writing career
- Development of a professional writing plan for your career after graduation
- Understanding of the literary landscape in Australia and strategically placing your work within that landscape

Assessment
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.
