This unit provides you with opportunities to read, explore, discuss and evaluate a number of Australian texts written and published over the last twenty-five years. Upon completing this unit, you are able to understand and critically interrogate texts pertinent to contemporary Australian society and culture.

It is important for you to acquire knowledge of a range of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australian writings.

Aims

This unit aims to improve your analytical, creative as well as oral and written communication skills.

Objectives

1. Develop a broad and coherent understanding of a range of literature from contemporary Australia.
2. Demonstrate reflective and analytical ways of thinking about the social, cultural and ethnic contexts of contemporary Australian writing.
3. Interpret and communicate ideas effectively through the skills of critical textual analysis.

Content

This unit provides you with opportunities to read, explore, discuss and critically evaluate a number of Indigenous and non-Indigenous texts written and published in Australia, in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Upon completing this unit, you will be able to understand and critically engage with fictional texts pertinent to Australian culture, history and society.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This unit will be conducted via a mixture of lectures, discussions, films, guest presentations and tutorials. Emphasis will also be placed on your research and investigation in relevant areas. In tutorial sessions you will receive feedback from tutors on assessment items, and tutors will also liaise and consult with you regarding your major assessment.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.
