Rationale

This unit examines various forms of creative writing in order to provide skills in written creative language as well as a basic theoretical background. It is appropriate in developing writing and critical skills for professional writers such as literary creative writers and journalists, as well as for para-writing professions such as law or health communication.

Aims

This unit aims to facilitate the development of introductory creative, critical and analytical skills in reading and writing including poetry and short fiction.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Analyse and critically engage with short stories and poetry, and construct a short creative work based on a developing understanding of creative writing theory and practice.
2. Explain contemporary and historical critical and creative writing theories and their relation to writing.
3. Identify conceptual and practical links between historical and contemporary creative writing strategies and a range of literary works, including your own work.
4. Critically review contemporary and innovative literary forms, and critically analyse a creative work with regard to both its content and form.

Content

The unit addresses content such as poetry and short fiction. The unit looks at the development of these literary forms as a way of understanding how a practitioner might best approach both the writing and critical analysis of them in the contemporary context.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Classroom practice includes an integrated program of lectures and tutorials, with a balance of small group, large group, online and individual activities. Guided writing activities and critical discussion of writing theories and works will form the backbone of most tutorials. You are encouraged to develop your understanding of the theoretical content of the course by engaging in innovative forms of writing and analysis. Opportunities for the discussion of alternative forms of writing practice or analysis, and workshopping of works in progress will be part of some sessions. The lecture series also include guest lectures from published authors and other industry professionals who share their knowledge of the art and business of writing.
