This unit focuses upon aesthetic debates that inform contemporary art practice The unit concentrates on developing historical, critical and analytical skills in evaluating modern and contemporary critical issues in the visual arts as well as contemporary culture in general. For this reason, it examines the status of art today, asking what type of knowledge does art give us, whether it remains important today and how art is it best comprehended.

Rationale

Contemporary Aesthetic Debates acts as a bridge to postgraduate research work within the arts. As such, the unit introduces you to a higher-level analysis with a particular focus on contemporary art practice,.It explores theoretical and critical debates about the role and place of art in the contemporary cultural context. It addresses the status of art today, it'\s institutional and historical settings, the presumption of knowledge associated with the arts and finally poses the question of how art is it best comprehended in today's wider cultural context.

Aims

This unit aims to develop historical, critical and analytical skills in reading and writing about contemporary critical issues in the visual arts and contemporary culture. It aims to foster both critical research skills and an awareness of the wider critical context of contemporary arts practice.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. display skills in theoretical inquiry related to contemporary visual arts;
2. articulate that level of inquiry in spoken and written form;
3. display a critical grasp of the contemporary art critical-philosophical context.

Content

The unit addresses content such as the transformations involved in 'fine art' with modernist art practices. The unit explores how such transformations continue to impact upon contemporary art practices. The content of the discussions will involve specific studies of particular art practices in conjunction with case studies of particular aesthetic, artistic and cultural issues and practices.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This unit will involve lecture-seminars, formal presentations, and discussion of assigned readings. These seminars will be based around lecture and class presentations, as well as class discussion of select readings that develop understanding of issues relating to critical theory, aesthetic philosophy and contemporary art practice.

An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
In this unit, you will receive formative feedback on your critical skills of analysis and progressive through the unit throughout the semester in tutorial presentations and class discussions. Weight: 0%

Assessment name: Case Study
Description: (Summative and Formative) You will be required to read and make a point form summation of key aspects of the weekly readings/text examined and bring it to class each week. At least five points are required, but no more than 10 points. You will be required to discuss your key points in seminars in addition, and as a supplement, to the person leading discussion each week. Half a page is required each week.

Description: (Summative and Formative) You will be required to lead discussion of the reading for the week chosen. You will be required to give an assessment of the issues raised by the specific article and relate it to the course of the discussions throughout the unit. 1500 words.

Description: (Summative) You will be asked to write an essay that focuses upon a contemporary artist, theme, genre, medium or methodological approach to the arts (your specific topic will be negotiated with the lecturer). 2500 words.
