Sample subject outline - Semester 1 2013
Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
As the conditions of contemporary art practices, their production, reception and contribution to society are extremely diverse, complex and multi-layered; a professional practicing arts-worker needs to be well informed of the current arts climate. To operate within this environment, you require strong self-advocacy skills and the ability to communicate a personal position in a range of contexts. To support this development in this final year unit, you will undertake an intensive study in the studio supported by research into a broad range of artists' practices and contemporary art theory.
Aims
This unit aims to provide you with frameworks and experience to develop critical, creative and analytical thinking and artistic decision-making skills, and to develop effective communication in a variety of contexts and modes. It also aims to incorporate codes of practice in contemporary studio art and personal philosophies to create an integrated artistic practice.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. formulate and produce a body of artwork that demonstrates artistic coherence;
2. discuss in depth the processes, practical and conceptual, leading to the production of your artwork;
3. communicate an awareness of contemporary art and artists' practices;
4. communicate critical awareness of contemporary art issues and demonstrate that awareness in your own practice.
Content
This unit addresses content such as:
Investigation of personal artistic directions and conceptual frameworks for your own visual arts practice; investigation and application of contemporary concepts to your own visual arts practice; articulation of your position within the context of contemporary art practice; presentation, articulation and advocacy within the context of contemporary art theory and practice.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Staff and student individual consultations supported by seminars and special-focus lectures are directed at developing your capacity to produce artwork, as well as your skills in discussing and contextualising such production in an informed and coherent manner. Exhibitions give you practical experience of problem-solving for your own practice. Seminar presentations give you practical experience in preparation and presentation of ideas for peer group discussion. You will be expected to search for and critically evaluate information from a variety of sources using effective strategies and appropriate technologies.
Assessment
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.
