This unit provides the necessary critical evaluation of issues and practices that relate to considerations of space in modern and contemporary art, new media and culture in general. It provides a historical overview of key art practices that have focused their critical attention to the issue of space and the built environment. In order to function as an informed practitioner in the environment of public space you must acquire such knowledge because it will form the critical-analytical background to current debates and theories in the field of spatial culture and public art.

In order to function as an informed practitioner in the environment of public space, you need to acquire the critical-analytical background to current debates and theories in the field of spatial culture and public art. This unit provides you with the necessary critical evaluation of issues and practices that relate to considerations of space in modern and contemporary art, new media and culture in general. It will provide you with a historical overview of key art practices that have focused their critical attention to the issue of space and the built environment.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to assist you understand the history and theories of space, their influence and social implication - particularly those of modern and contemporary practice and to develop the critical skills necessary for the evaluation and development of public art as well as art and the built environment. It will also foster a critical-analytic capacity that will enable you to grasp and evaluate the key presumptions of past practice and to understand the interactions of spatial models from the real to the virtual.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. display a coherent knowledge of C20th spatial practices and effectively communicate it
2. Investigate and critically evaluate contemporary spatial practices
3. apply ideas to practice of spatial art projects
4. work effectively in a collaborative team

Content

An art-historical survey of key moments in the thinking of public space in modern and contemporary art practice; an introduction to crucial philosophical concepts that relate to this thinking about art, space, the community and public art; major developments in spatial theory in contemporary culture; interactions of spatial models from the real to the virtual; a survey introduction to the latest research and critical engagement with such issues.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This unit will involve lectures and tutorials. Occasionally some electronic visual aids will be utilised, such as recorded videotapes. A particular emphasis will be placed upon fostering critical reflection and debate in the tutorials stemming from set readings and papers presented on each topic.

An assignment submitted after the due datewithout an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
The overall aim of the assessment pattern is to foster the critical skills of analysis, by acquiring knowledge of past practices and understandings of public space as well as developing imaginative capacities in regard to art and spatial culture.

Assessment name: Oral and Written Critique
Description: Regular weekly contribution to class discussion; evidence of reading; lead tutorial discussion of one topic from assigned weekly readings; written critique of issues raised in class in relation to chosen topic of the week.

Assessment name: Project
Description: Choose an existing public space in Brisbane and devise a hypothetical spatial project for it utilising a theme (or themes) discussed in the unit. The project will follow up issues relating to art, the visual image and space covered in the unit, but applied in new and creative ways.
