In this unit sustained critical involvement and an increasing commitment to artistic conceptual pursuits is underpinned by contemporary theoretical reference which includes investigation into a broad range of artists' practices. You are required to articulate a personal position in these issues.

The conditions of current cultural practices, their production, reception and contribution to society are extremely diverse, increasingly complex and multi-layered. This unit constitutes an intensive study in the studio media of choice. Sustained critical involvement and an increasing commitment to artistic conceptual pursuits will be underpinned by contemporary theoretical reference. You will be required to articulate a personal position in relation to these issues.
Aims
In this unit you will be supported in identifying and investigating and sustaining personal artistic inquiry through personal research and the acquisition of dependent skills and knowledge. Similarly you will be provided with the opportunities to develop a contextual critical awareness of contemporary and historical art issues. This unit aims to contribute to your development of the following graduate capabilities:
- knowledge and skills pertinent to the visual arts
- critical, creative and analytical thinking, and effective problem solving
- researching and critically evaluating information on contemporary and historical art practices
- demonstrating the capacity for self-assessment of your learning needs and achievements
- active contribution to intellectual and cultural activities
- accountability and codes of practice relevant to professional art practices
- characteristics of self-reliance, including the ability to take initiative and to embrace innovation.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Display an active involvement in studio-based enquiry;
2. Develop and critically evaluate your experimental processes and outcomes;
3. Display the creative application of relevant technical skills;
4. Describe and analyse the characteristics, content and context of your practice;
5. Locate, evaluate and synthesise practitioner research from a variety of sources into your written and oral communication; and
6. Communicate your ideas and approaches effectively in both written and oral contexts.
Content
In consultation with studio staff, you will investigate and accomplish your personal artistic directions and conceptual frameworks in a studio-based artistic process. All aspects of instruction and personal arts practice, including studio seminars, will be sustaining through critical inquiry, personal research and the acquisition of dependent skills and knowledge.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Staff and student consultation; supported by varied flexible modes of delivery and defensible opportunity, including lectures, seminars, exhibitions, private readings, studio practice and industry experience.
Assessment

An assignment submitted after the due datewithout an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

Resource materials
Due to the individualised nature of artistic practice, research strategies and reading lists will be recommended by studio staff as required.
Risk assessment statement
You will be instructed on safe procedures and the required safety gear for all studio and workshop processes that are demonstrated. Health and Safety files are readily available for all materials and machinery in all studios areas. Technical supervision is provided for workshops and available on a regular basis during the week. Technical supervision is mandatory in 3D workshop and printmaking studios. A minimum of three students is required for after-hours access to studios. Risk assessment forms must be completed and submitted before project work starts. You have an obligation to make yourself familiar with and adhere to the Visual Arts Studio Health and Safety Procedures and Health and Safety Documents.
