Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
The interface between the graphic design, print and art environments is dynamic and pervasive. An awareness of contemporary practices through conceptual and cross-media investigations will allow you to interpret, create and engage in these environments. The unit provides you with opportunities to develop graduate attributes in critical, creative and analytical thinking, and knowledge of local, national and global discourses within art/design practices.
Aims
The aims of this unit are to increase your creative ability through a conceptual and material approach to problem-solving that emphasizes graphic and print media. By giving you an understanding of the applications of art practice to graphic outcomes and graphic processes that extend and inform artistic practice, the unit aims to assist you in developing contemporary and innovative personal practices.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. apply open, speculative methods to art and design problems;
2. apply graphic skills and innovative uses of media in the production of images
3. understand the relationship between art and design elements within individual practice.
Content
This unit addresses content such as:
Artistic practice and graphic application concepts emphasizing cross media experimentation; substructures of design methods such as repetition, pattern, progression, variation; multiple outcomes using modular units; properties of materials and receiving surfaces, both natural and synthetic; print media processes such as relief, stencil, embossing, collage, transfer and digital interventions; visual analogistics.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
This unit will involve lectures, demonstrations, discussions, workshop and studio participation. You will also undertake individual research referring to recommended texts, other references and exhibitions.
