This unit includes the following: development of an enquiry-based, self-sustaining art practice; fostering of appropriate research skills; encouragement of open flexible independent approach to formulating resolutions to conceptual and visual concerns; development of safe workshop practices, safe studio work habits and appropriate professional skills. It includes introductions to technological artforms.

Rationale

Contemporary cultural conditions and artistic practices are very diverse and complex. This unit is a basic introduction to the exploration of major contemporary art concepts and studio methods and is therefore placed in the first year of your course. It is important that you begin to develop and articulate a personal understanding of your own practice as well as begin to explore its possible position within the broader context of contemporary art both theoretically and practically.

Aims

This unit aims to begin developing strategies for practice in contemporary studio art as well as an awareness of personal philosophies, to create an integrated and self-sustaining artistic practice. It also aims to develop self-motivation, self-reliance, as well as a sense of inquiry and openness to new ideas and experiences.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Formulate an individual creative direction in the practice of Visual Arts
2. Exercise skills and knowledge of basic forms, materials and processes in Visual Arts
3. Apply creative processes to solve problems presented in the Visual Arts studio
4. Demonstrate analytical ways of thinking to engage with issues that arise when working in the Visual Arts studio
5. Apply a basic vocabulary of terms relevant to the practice of Visual Arts

Content

This unit addresses content such as:
Investigation and applications of contemporary art concepts to the establishing of an individual arts practice; production and technical studio workshops; studio health and safety; consultation with studio staff in developing personal artistic directions and individual conceptual frameworks.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Staff and student consultation supported by varied flexible modes of delivery, including lectures, tutorials, maintenance of a visual diary, exhibitions, readings, studio practice, individual student investigation and research.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

Required Text

Due to the varied nature of individual concepts and artistic practice, research strategies and reading lists will be discussed with studio staff. Details on materials, tools and lists of local suppliers will be provided during the first class.

Risk assessment statement

You will be instructed on safe procedures and the required safety gear for all studio and workshop processes that are demonstrated. Health and Safety files are readily available for all materials and machinery in all studios areas. Technical supervision is provided for workshops and available on a regular basis during the week. Technical supervision is mandatory in 3D workshop and printmaking studios. A minimum of three students is required for after hours access to studios. Risk assessment forms must be completed and submitted before project work starts. You have an obligation to make yourself familiar with and adhere to the Visual Arts Studio Health and Safety Procedures and Health and Safety Documents. Refer to QUT Health and Safety.
