Rationale
NB: Information in this Unit Outline is subject to change prior to commencement of semester
As the Creative Industries sector continues to expand, it is increasingly important that graduates possess skills necessary to come up with imaginative visual solutions to meet its demands. A practical understanding of the problems of making objects, and of the relationships between objects and their surroundings, is essential for students who will be working in the sector. This first year unit introduces you to current contemporary art practices and concepts to assist you in making, analysing and critiquing three-dimensional artworks. As a second semester unit, this unit will develop foundational skills in 3D media and processes to complement and augment understandings and knowledge of 2D media and processes.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to initiate an understanding of 3D artworks within the context of traditional and contemporary art practice, and to use media, materials and processes of choice to create, analyse and critique 3D artworks.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Display an active involvement in the production of three-dimensional works of art;
2. Display the creative application of relevant technical skills and theoretical knowledge;
3. Develop and critically evaluate your experimental processes and outcomes;
4. Describe and analyse the chief characteristics, content and context of your works;
5. Collate practitioner research from a variety of sources into your documentation; and
6. Communicate your ideas, processes and outcomes effectively in both visual and written modes.
Content
The unit content addresses the principles and practice of three-dimensional form in contemporary art. You will develop a skill base through experimenting with a variety of materials and processes, culminating in the production of an independent work (or body of work). Practical studio sessions will be complemented by the weekly lecture program which will explore notions of material, process, form, objecthood, spatiality and text as they apply to three-dimensional practice.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
This unit will involve lectures, workshop demonstrations, studio-based exercises and group critique sessions. You will be required to keep a substantial self-reflective journal to interrogate and document your developing capacity to make and critique 3D art works. You will debate and critically reflect on your own and other's art works to test your observations and ideas, and to assist in the development of your ability to communicate effectively within the context of contemporary 3D practices.
Assessment
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.
