Rationale

This introductory unit is a studio course enabling you to explore, construct, analyse and interpret visual data through the 2D graphic modes of drawing, painting and printmaking. The breadth of the studies encourages a building of conceptual frameworks in visual languages and core skills so you can develop a strong flexible 2D vocabulary and continue building knowledge of historical and contemporary issues in the visual arts which you can expand in subsequent studio practice.

Aims

This unit aims to:
- develop your core visual vocabulary in 2D media and increase your ability as an individual aesthetic thinker. In addition the unit aims to:
- develop your critical, creative, and analytical thinking, in both the theory and practice of these forms and processes.You will utilise and
- develop effective communication skills in a variety of visual contexts and modes pertinent to these contemporary practices in the creative industries.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. anaylse traditional and contemporary forms of 2D media;
2. formulate and produce a body of 2D artwork that demonstrates artistic coherence;
3. articulate the processes, practical and conceptual, leading to the production of your 2D artwork;
4. apply effective communication and knowledge of contemporary forms of 2D media.

Content

This unit will introduce you to the key features of a range of two-dimensional media and their contribution to the methods and concepts of contemporary art. These approaches link investigation and application with individual practices and projects. You will consider 2D form in a contemporary context with an emphasis on process and experimentation.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Lectures and group critiques augment studio projects in the various media.

This unit is a foundation study focusing on the provision of core skills and process understandings. We encourage imaginative, innovative responses and creative work. You will be expected to search for and critically evaluate information from a variety of sources using strategies enabling you to critically form, discuss and contextualise your work.

The studies are communicated through demonstrations, lectures, reference materials, gallery/studio visits, individual student and class critiques. Personal experimentation and decision making within projects is encouraged.
