Certain skills and abilities are common to all of these potential destinations. Successful artists, art teachers and arts professionals benefit from rigorous research, writing and visual analysis skills as well as a broad knowledge of the industry as a whole and it is important that you are introduced to these skills at the beginning of your course to contextualise your learning throughout your degree. Through visual arts specific activities you are able to discover the connection between core academic skills and your future career in the visual arts.

Rationale

Careers in the visual arts are diverse and dynamic and the sector encompasses a range of roles and employment possibilities for you to pursue. Successful artists, art teachers and arts professionals benefit from rigorous research, writing and visual analysis skills as well as a broad knowledge of the industry as a whole and it is important that you are introduced to these skills at the beginning of your course to contextualise your learning throughout your degree. Through visual arts specific activities you are able to discover the connection between core academic skills and your future career in the visual arts.

Aims

This unit aims to provide you with the basic set of skills, capacities and understandings necessary for you to succeed in your visual arts studies and within the wider arts industry. It also aims to encourage a self-motivated approach to learning through the identification of discipline-specific goals.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. locate and evaluate information in various forms about art, artists and the visual arts industry competently;
2. apply written communications skills for visual arts contexts taking into account academic writing conventions;
3. analyse and critique visual material in written and oral contexts;
4. explain a range of fundamental key concepts relating to modern and contemporary art.

Content

The unit content covers the basic written and oral communication skills required for success in your studies and a career in the visual arts. You will also be introduced to key concepts, such as modern and contemporary ideas of the studio, the role of art history, the identity of the artist and the structure of the visual arts industry. You will be encouraged to consider your own study goals with regard to these ideas and to participate in supported practical activities related to the topics discussed.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This unit incorporates lectures, gallery site visits and use of the online Blackboard site. Tutorial activities will assist you in the development of your practical and conceptual skills and you will receive regular formative feedback from your tutor.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.
