Rationale
NB: Information in this Unit Outline is subject to change prior to commencement of semester
Within their rapidly changing societies, Asian contemporary artists not only engage with visual arts issues relating to internationalism and globalisation, but they also work with concepts associated with the reinvestment of traditions and the assertions of individual, socio-cultural and regional identities. Asian contemporary visual arts practices reflect not only past and present socio-cultural and politico-historical factors, but also reflect engagements with a century of Euro-American ideas and ideologies, new technologies and global popular culture. Though people and cultures bring the historical past with them into the present, contemporary visual arts in Asia reflect increasingly complex and multi-layered cultural practices that are simultaneously local and global.
