This unit provides an overview of the key concepts and movements that comprise twentieth-century modernism in the period 1900-1945. Beginning with cubism, the unit provides an understanding of terms, such as avant-garde, modernism and modernity. It explains how modernism focuses upon the issue of representation and how this approach led to inter-disciplinary work, which engaged with film, photography, design, architecture and installation as well as the traditional visual arts.

Rationale
Modernism is a crucial area of study for understanding twentieth century and contemporary visual culture. It will also assist you to become an informed practitioner in contemporary art, design, architecture and artwriting. In this unit, you will examine the concepts and movements that comprise twentieth-century modernism.
Aims
This unit will assist comprehension of a vital aspect of twentieth-century visual culture by giving you a coherent theoretical-historical knowledge of the period, 1900-1945. The unit also helps to foster effective written and oral communication skills as well as skills in visual analysis of images across different media.
Objectives
On completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Provide an overview of the development of modern art;
2. Explain the social, cultural and philosophical attitudes and influences that inform modernism;
3. Summarise the history of modern avant-garde artwork, procedures and theories;
4. apply written and visual analytic skills.
Content
This unit addresses content such as: modernism, which is a crucial feature of twentieth century culture. This unit will explore its artistic, social and political aspects. It will also examine its geographic and media diversity. Key themes such as `avant-garde', modernism and modernity will be explored in detail - especially in relation to the theory and practice of avant-garde modernism - as will the inter-disciplinary nature of modernism.

The overall aim of the assessment pattern is to foster a combination of skills between textual-critical analysis and visual analysis.
