Graduates need to be able to identify and develop opportunities to advance their careers through professional networking, and by responding to shifts and changes in their professional field. This unit emphasises the role of the entrepreneur in the creative process. It offers you the opportunity to develop entrepreneurial, environment-scanning and networking skills necessary to identify, and take advantage of, opportunities for full professional production of your work in the future. It is offered in the final year of your degree when you have some relevant project experience and are developing a professional maturity.
Aims
This unit aims to introduce and examine entrepreneurial skills professional artists, teacher artists, producers and administrators need in order to identify and take advantage of employment, project and production opportunities available in the performing arts sector in Australia.
This is an advanced-level final year unit that draws upon previous learning in your course.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Reflect on your practice and appraise its potential response to relevant policies, frameworks and opportunities
2. Create a hypothetical set of networks, opportunities and actions that may support your future professional practice
3. Formulate your practice and projects in ways that are meaningful to relevant stakeholders
4. Collaboratively compose a proposal that takes advantage of an appropriate professional opportunity

The unit provides you with an overview of entrepreneurship in the performing arts sector, including the importance of entrepreneurial, environment-scanning and networking skills as part of a project- or portfolio- based careers in the performing arts. Broad principles will translate into strategies for project and career planning in a range of performing arts sectors, such as conventional theatre, contemporary theatre, theatre for young people, live art and community cultural development.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The unit will be presented through lectures, including guest lectures that draw upon the expert knowledge of performing arts and performing arts education professionals, tutorials, demonstrations, and practical workshops which feed directly into key assessment tasks.
