Sample subject outline - Semester 1 2013
Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
The acquisition of technical or artistic skills requires constant and thorough practice, not just in a studio context but in a setting that closely models conditions a graduating acting or technical production student can expect to find in the profession. This unit is placed in the third year of the course when you are most able to transfer the theoretical and practical skills you have gained in the studio to practical performance in a public venue that is offered to the paying public.
Aims
This unit aims to expose you to the rigors of public performance by providing you with a number of production exercises and classes that are authentic theatre or screen productions in terms of their professional and management ethic and artistic expectations.
This is an advanced-level final year (capstone) unit that draws upon all the previous learning in your course.
Objectives
On completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1. Display strongly developed creative and/or artisticskills. 2. Think critically, creatively and analytically when undertaking tasks within a professional context.
3. Apply effective communication in a variety of contexts and modes.
4. Work independently and collaboratively.
6. Display the characteristics of self reliance and initiative.
7. Display the professional work ethic expected by the Industry.
Content
The unit addresses content such as participation in a season of profiled performance projects working with directors who have a national or international reputation either as artists or as teachers. It may be possible in some cases for students to apply to undertake part of this unit through secondment to professional companies.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
You will work as an ensemble and perform in roles for film and theatre, working with professional film crew or with live audiences.
Assessment
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

Because of the nature the projects, formative assessment is an inherent part of the process. There is regular feedback, analysis and reflection of your work. (The industry-based procedure of receiving regular performance notes from a Director during the rehearsal process will provide you with feedback and direction, while regular feedback from your lecturers should be taken as an indication of your progression in the unit.) SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Due to the practical nature of this unit and the important of developing individual skills within a dynamic group culture, you are required to make a serious commitment to taking responsibility for your progress within the restrictions of a group environment. In order to meet unit objectives and for you to gain maximum benefit from Theatre Project 1, attendance at all required rehearsals is strongly recommended. It is expected that you will spend approximately 200 associated hours on each practical project.

Full physical participation in any class/rehearsal is subject to compliance with safe practice. Physical challenges are an inherent part of physical performance. The development of essential risk management skills that minimize potential injury is a high priority.
Theatres are potentially dangerous places, particularly backstage during performances when lowlight conditions prevail. You will be warned by the stage manager, the production manger or the director of any specific risks that you will need to be aware of, when your project team first moves in to the theatre.
If you are aware of personal physical or emotional vulnerabilities you should inform your tutor if you are feeling unsafe or at risk in any way.
Every effort is made by staff at QUT to ensure that theatre students work in a safe environment. Conversely you are expected to follow all safety rules and directions, and to ensure that you do not put at risk the safety of others in any way.
