The unit explores the practical realisation of the principles of intermedial theatre - the use of space, the basics of projection, the design and composition of aural landscapes - the demands of, and effect of the digitally mediated upon the production, narrative, performers and audience. The unit is structured to incorporate a degree of practical application and experience in solving the challenges faced by the digital screen and audio designer working in theatre, including 'hands-on' experience of the processes and demands of generating time based and real time media in a practical, readable form, acceptable to, and consistent with standard practice within the theatre profession.
Aims
The aim of this unit it to give an understanding of intermedial applications for theatre which include conceptualisation and realisation, and incorporate an appreciation of the overall production process.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1.Communicate ideas using intermedial tools;
2. Understand the processes and techniques of incorporating time based media(ie recorded audio and film) into live performance;
3. Demonstrate a developed and accurate understanding of how time based media translates to a full scenographic scale that includes lighting, audio, visual and technical implications and requirements;
4. Demonstrate a developed and accurate understanding of current intermedial applications in industry;
Content
This unit addresses content such as:
- The analysis of text based works and text based theatrical concepts;
- Intermedial strategies for traditional production;
- The creation of preliminary drafts of audio and screen based designs for set texts;
- The development of basic installation plans;
- The creation of soundscapes for theatre;
- The creation of moving image designs for theatre (both time based and interactive);
