Students who have an interest in the social function of television, film and new media should be encouraged to think critically about social, cultural and aesthetic issues regarding the media. In this unit you will look at these issues, and learn the skills you need in order to research them and think about them critically.

Rationale

Critical thinking about television and film in the contemporary digital era takes into account the influence of media convergence on the production, form, design, distribution, and reception of TV shows and movies. Using evidence-based approaches, the unit examines significant issues resulting from TV and film's interactions with different media formats in a transmedia environment.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to use scholarly evidence-based approaches to consider significant social, cultural, aesthetic, reception, and industrial issues resulting from the encounter of TV with film and new media formats in a transmedia environment. A related aim is to develop advanced academic and professional-level research, writing, and presentation skills suitable for a scholarly environment.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Employ advanced level research skills suitable for a scholarly environment.
2. Employ knowledge appropriate for critical analysis.
3. Produce work that adheres to accepted professional standards.
4. Outline significant issues related to TV and film storytelling in a transmedia environment.
5. Produce a written review of sources, evaluating and interpreting a variety of material.
6. Produce a written critical essay on a television franchise in its transmedia context.

Content

This unit addresses content such as producing narrative television productions in immersive media environments; audience engagement with television shows via different media platforms.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This unit is delivered through an integrated series of lectures and tutorials. Tutorials provide opportunities to discuss, apply, and raise further questions about approaches outlined in lectures.
