This unit considers the role of the producer and executive producer in film and television production with a particular focus on running a production. It considers the following: preparing and running a budget, achieving balance in above-the-line, below-the-line and marketing costs, casting and crewing a production, and legal and copyright issues.

Rationale

People with an interest in producing film, television and multimedia productions need to develop knowledges and skills that form the basis of an effective industry-related repertoire in relation to working in a range of media businesses.

Aims

This unit aims to introduce practices and theories of the film, television and new media business, providing you with a detailed insight into the management of small and larger scale productions. The aim of this unit is to enhance your organisational skills and project management abilities in film, television and new media business.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Understand the industrial, legal and regulatory structures of the film, television and new media industries.
2. Apply knowledge of essential requirements of producing film, television and new media projects..
3. Employ a working knowledge of the language and protocols of producing and production management.
4. Recognise a diversity of media productions including film, television and new media.
5. Gain preparation for working in and leadership of a production team.
6. Gain skills in scheduling, budgeting and managing a media production.

Content

This unit addresses content such as:
- Context of production management within the film, television and new media industries;
- Key stages of production
- Breaking down scripts, scheduling and budgeting
- Casting considerations, crew roles and crewing;
- Copyright, legal and insurance issues;
- Managing production resources.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

The unit will be taught via a combination of lectures, tutorials and in-class video clips. You are expected to attend all tutorials and notify your tutor if you are away.'Lectures will provide insights and understandings relating to production management. The tutorials will enable you to discuss your ideas and will engage you in workshop activity.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.
