This unit builds on Music and Sound Production 1. It introduces students to sound synthesis and signal processing and extends the students understanding of the approaches and aesthetics underpinning creative music and sound production. Students will further develop practical skills in music and sound composition and deepen their knowledge of the hardware and software commonly used in creative production.

Rationale

Contemporary music and sound practitioners need foundation skills in music and sound production to operate effectively in professional environments. This unit builds on the skills developed in Music and Sound Production 1 and extends students' understanding of commonly used software tools for music and sound production.

Aims

This unit continues to develop the set of production skills acquired in Music and Sound Production 1. It aims to build your understanding of the approaches and aesthetics underpinning creative music and sound production. You will extend your practical skills in music and sound composition and deepen your knowledge of the hardware and software used in creative production.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Understand the fundamentals of basic sound synthesis and signal processing
2. Be familiar with and create music and sound works with widely used software and hardware tools
3. Create music and sound works that combine acoustic and electronic resources
4. Demonstrate simple multi-tracking and mixing
5. Show a critical awareness of musical repertoire, styles and modes of production and presentation and use this to evaluate and critique musical works
6. Accurately document and effectively communicate details of the production process.

Content

Skills for the creation, interpretation and presentation of music using digital media, digital abstraction of the musical process, digital signal processing, sequencing and synthesis skills, music critiquing and analysis skills, group performance and musical communication skills, self-reflective learning skills.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Teaching and learning in this unit will be through weekly lectures and tutorials, small group practical sessions, critical listening sessions and self-directed learning activities.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.
