Rationale

This is the first of two professional practice units designed for artists to extend and improve their creative /performance practice through intensive (live and/or digital) studio-based exploration, either independently or collaboratively, combined with individual reflective analysis.

Aims

This unit aims to extend the reach of your creative / performance practice or move it into new directions through a self-directed project of original creative work, with mentoring advice and guidance from a supervisor in your discipline. The unit also aims to provide you with self-reflective and critical analysis skills to enable you to be an articulate and reflective practitioner.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. apply skills acquired and processes involved in the investigation of your creative / performance practice;
2. apply the development of your own creative identity and language of practice;
3. collaborate within and/or outside your discipline to create / produce / perform, with a public outcome, a work-in-progress or a completed work;
4. contextualise your practice through written reflection and analysis, drawing on the works of other artists and scholars in your field.

Content

Through negotiation with the Unit Coordinator and a supervisor appropriate to your investigation, you will:
- present an outline of the ideas and techniques to be explored in your project, as well as a resource assessment of personnel, venue/technical and production requirements (subject to the approval of your supervisor);
- realise your intentions for the project, providing the supervisor with a timeline and schedule for completion;
- write a reflective analytical paper to accompany the creative project for which a framework and assessment criteria will be developed with your supervisor.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

As this is a self-directed study, learning will occur according to the intention and structure of the creative / performance practice and analysis. Your supervisor will monitor your progress, providing mentorship and guidance, both with regards to the studio practice and the written reflection. Peer feedback is encouraged.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

Risk assessment statement

For dance students this unit will involve physical work primarily in purpose-built dance studios and industry standard performance venues. If projects are site-specific or in non-dance venues, you are required to comply with the standard health and safety regulations, and take appropriate precautions to minimise risks. Full physical participation in any class / rehearsal is subject to compliance with safe dance practice. Physical challenges are an inherent part of dance practice. The development of essential risk-management skills that minimise potential injury is a high priority with all lecturing staff and supervisors. You are taught safe dance principles as life-long learning skills and it is expected that you apply them in this unit. Due to the athletic nature of dance training, the dance department and its external supervisors will provide the necessary duty of care in emergency situations through its first-aid and health and safety arrangements. Access to on-campus doctors and dance physiotherapists is possible at short notice.

Disclaimer - Offer of some units is subject to viability, and information in these Unit Outlines is subject to change prior to commencement of semester.
