Rationale

NB: Information in this Unit Outline is subject to change prior to commencement of semester

It is vital that as doctoral students you develop your project work into forms that will connect and communicate with networks of researchers and industry practitioners, in order to present yourselves as effective leaders within the creative industries. This capstone unit occurs in the final semester of the doctorate in order to encapsulate the two research projects for the Doctor of Creative Industries as a portfolio thesis, through a major presentation at a public forum for peers, academics and relevant professionals. Its purpose is to demonstrate and share the doctoral findings and their signifcance for the field.

Aims

This capstone unit provides you with a structured environment within which you are able to enhance your professional practice through exploring the most appropriate forms of representation for your project materials. Through individual research and discussions with supervisors and the DCI coordinator, methods of assembling a creative, artistic, and/or professional portfolio thesis will be examined.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Design and develop a penultimate version of your two doctoral projects as a portfolio thesis
2. Justify how your thesis reflects best practice within the contemporary context of your site and field
3. Recognise and apply the key qualities of an effective oral presentation.
4. Prepare and present a major seminar reporting on the process, design and concepts underpinning your portfolio thesis

Content

The unit addresses content in which:
- You will analyse the context and concepts underpinning the representation of the project work for the development of your portfolio thesis
- You will present a major seminar to your peers and colleagues within the Creative Industries Faculty outlining how the research and professional practice embedded in your two projects represent your portfolio of doctoral work

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

The chief teaching and learning strategy for this unit encompassesself-directed learning supported by the DCI coordinator and research project supervisor and mentor. This involves being an active researcher in an industry practitioner context as well as having the ability to apply the skills of effective oral presentations to the delivery of your own final seminar.
