The development of the creative industries has been identified as a central element of the contemporary knowledge-based economy, which is informational, global and networked. This unit introduces concepts of the creative industries and the work of creative industries practitioners who explore and exploit the expression of creativity for commercial and artistic gain. In exploring the work of creative industries practitioners you will develop written communication skills for new media and academic contexts and reflect on your own emerging role as a creative industries practitioner. This unit is the first of two Creative Industries Foundations units which focus on building an understanding of creative industries practices and a diverse range of literacies essential to working in this new knowledge economy.

Rationale

This unit draws upon cutting edge research into the distinctive characteristics of the creative industries and the creative workforce to introduce you to study and work as an emerging inter-disciplinary creative practitioner. You will investigate creative career possibilities and opportunities, and develop essential information literacy and written communication skills for both academic and professional contexts. You will envision potential creative career pathways, discover which skills you'll need, and plan your course of study in the BCI.

Aims

The intention of this unit is to develop your capacity to build a sustainable lifelong career in the creative industries, by introducing you to creative industries disciplines, inter-disciplinarity, and the careers of creative industries practitioners. The unit will help you plan your course of study in line with your career interests and potential career opportunities. It will also enhance your research, written communication and critical thinking skills for various professional and academic purposes.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Research, investigate and analyse creative industries sectors, disciplines and occupations in terms of career opportunities and challenges, and skill needs.
2. Locate, evaluate and synthesise information from a variety of sources into your written communication.
3. Write for specific academic and creative industry applications taking into account audience, purpose and context.
4. Reflect on and communicate to others your career interests, influences, capabilities and career options as an emerging creative industries practitioner.
5. Envision career possibilities and plan your program of study, based on your career interests, research into creative industries careers, and effective academic study practices.

  • The Creative Industries: Disciplines and inter-disciplinarity

  • Uncertainty in professional creative practice: The value of openness and adaptability

  • Creative industries careers, disciplines and occupations

  • Individual career interests, values and capabilities

  • Essential capabilities for creative career success

  • Effective academic study, course and personal career planning

  • Information retrieval and analysis

  • Written communication for academic and professional / industry applications

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Teaching and learning approaches may include the following:

· self-paced skill development modules
Various self-help resources will be available for you in class and/or online.
You must have read any set material before class, and bring relevant materials with you. You should discuss your progress with your tutor and draw their attention to any problems you are experiencing.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

Students will be provided with verbal and/or written feedback on each piece of formative and summative assessment during the semester.

You will be awarded a final grade on a 1 to 7 scale

Description: Progressive Assessment: Individually you will complete exercises relating to your study/career development and information literacy. These will be delivered progressively throughout semester during tutorial classes and via online modules.

Description: Personal Reflective Profile: Individually you will develop a written profile that reflects on your career interests and influences as an emerging creative industries practitioner.

Assessment name: Professional Plans
Description: Career Development Portfolio: You will research and analyse and report on creative industries sectors, disciplines and occupations of interest in terms of career opportunities and skill needs, and use this research and your reflective profile (assessment 2) to envision potential career scenarios. You will explain and justify your individual course plan based on your research and analysis.
