Rationale

To be effective journalists, you need to develop further the basic broadcasting skills learnt in Radio and Television Journalism 1, adding sophistication and depth to the reporting, production and presentation skills developed there. In this unit there is a strong emphasis on television news, as the natural progression of techniques building on the ground skills introduced in RTVJ1.

Aims

This unit aims to develop your abilities to produce radio and television news and current affairs programs of broadcast standard, while strengthening the reporting skills developed in KJB233, and to encourage a greater understanding of, and reflection on, the role of the broadcast journalist in society and of the effect of the medium of delivery on the message. It is intended to give you a better understanding of the nature of radio and television news and current affairs in their various forms and related issues, and to further develop your understanding of newsgathering and reporting principles.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Produce television and radio news and current affairs programs and items to broadcast standard;
2. Analyse broadcasting and broadcast journalism (particularly news and current affairs) and their role in society;
3. Report news stories at an advanced level.

Content

This unit addresses content such as theorising TV and radio news gathering; Journalists and organisations; radio futures and television futures; producing TV and radio news and current affairs.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

The program is divided into two components. There is the lecture program and a practical program - including a presentation-training program and production work on radio and television broadcasts of QUT News.

The formative assessment for the subject KJB333, Radio and Television Journalism two, is conducted during the course of the radio and television journalism workshops, each of which is conducted intensively, over a week-long period.

The formative assessment consists of one on one feedback on radio and television scripts that are proposed for broadcast on the radio, or on the TV. You will discusses your script with a program producer and then adapt your script to take account of the feedback, before submitting the summative draft for final consideration and alteration (where necessary) for broadcast.

Description: (Formative and summative) Radio praxis. You will be required to undertake rostered radio news production shifts (between the hours of 08.00 and 18.00 each designated day) contributing to QUT News on Radio 4EB. Length: four roster days.

Assessment name: Reflective Journal
Description: (Summative) Reflective practice assignment. You will be required to submit a written reflection on the nature and role of broadcast journalism demonstrating your knowledge and analytical ability, based on lectures and your own readings in radio and television journalism.
