Sample subject outline - Semester 1 2013
Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
Journalists have always been early adopters of new technologies; from the telegraph to the telephone to telexes to satellite phones. News organisations are now being pragmatically restructured around digital production. Those who wish to enter this rapidly changing work environment need to know how to effectively use what was once called 'new media'.
Aims
This unit aims to develop an understanding of the importance of computer-generated information in journalism today, and for you to develop the analytical skills to assess and apply information supported by multimedia links and data.
Objectives
On the completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Understand and apply strategies to retrieve information from digital sources
2. Evaluate journalism sources.
3. Integrate multimedia sources to produce background reports.
4. Work professionally, within deadlines.
Content
This unit addresses content such as:
- Journalism and the internet
- Strategies for internet searching
- Web site evaluation
- Analysing and using data to generate news
- Writing reports incorporating multimedia
- Online publishing
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
All teaching in this unit will be in a series of seminars. Here, key concepts will be introduced and illustrated, alongside exercises directed at deepening understanding of content, and supporting student work-in-progress on assessment tasks.
